The above prices are estimates only and do not guarantee the price of your Website. Some web sites even though they “only have 3 pages” incur additional costs as in the example of a photographer wanting a Website with 3 web pages but wanting 300 photographs on each page. It is much more work to process 300 photos as we have to “optimize” each photograph to keep the file size small and the download time of your page down. While most Webmasters can easily put 300 photos on a page you may not have many web visitors if they had to wait 10 minutes or longer for the page to download onto their computer.
The above prices show web design and hosting. When figuring your total price you need to include the cost of the hosting. We suggest starting with the standard plan which is the lowest priced, unless you have reasons to upgrade. If your site has a large amount of visitors (in the tens of thousands), a huge amount of pictures or lots of files to download it may also require you to upgrade).
In its simplest form web hosting is the service that actually holds your Website and connects it to the internet for anyone to view with an internet connection. These services & prices vary greatly.
The two greatest influences on web hosting prices that you need to be concerned with are bandwidth and server hard drive space.
Bandwidth is the total size of all files transferred to web surfers from your site. An example, if your main web page is 20 KB total in size and 100 people visit it a month, that will be a total of 2000 KB of bandwidth used or 2 MB. In other words the more times your site is viewed or the larger your files on your Website are the more bandwidth you will need. This especially comes into play if you are going to have a large amount of pictures for viewing or large files for download on your site.
Most hosting companies will normally offer several “gigs” of bandwidth per month. A gig (aka:gigabyte) is 1000MB’s. In the above example you would need 50,000 people a month viewing your 20 kb Website page to reach 1 gig.
Don’t get any wild ideas about bandwidth. A 20 kb file is really rather small. This web page alone is appox 16 kb in size. You also loose bandwidth with email, and “uploads as well as “downloads”.
One good rule of thumb, get as much bandwidth as possible while staying within your budget. You can start off small (1 or 2 gigs) and see how it goes but understand if you reach your bandwidth limit for the month the hosting company will probably “suspend” your site (making it unavailable to web surfers) until the next month when the bandwidth clock starts over.
The other thing you need to consider is Server Hard Drive Space. This also differs greatly from hosting company to company. In a nut shell it is the amount of hard drive space you have to upload your Website and other files to. If you have 50 megabytes (aka:MB) of hard drive space and your Website is 75 MB in size your out of luck. Usually 100 MB worth of hard drive space is plenty for normal sights although if your site has a lot of pictures you may need more.
There are many, many other things to consider like how many email accounts you get, auto-responders, email forwarding and access to a control panel just to skim the surface.
We have found that for our customers it is simpler and more cost effective for us to handle the site creation and the hosting so there is no confusion. There have been previous situations of lost user ID and passwords or we were never notified of any changes which delay the whole process and makes it more costly.
